The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has announced plans to commence a nationwide strike beginning October 13, 2025, should the Federal Government fail to address its long-standing demands.
In a press release issued at the University of Abuja on Sunday, 28th September 2025, and signed by the ASUU National President, Prof. Christopher Piwuna, the Union expressed deep frustration over the government’s failure to honor agreements and resolve critical issues affecting the university system.
The statement listed the Union’s core grievances as follows:
- Renegotiation of the 2009 ASUU–Federal Government Agreement
- Sustainable funding of public universities
- Full revitalization of Nigerian universities
- End to victimization of ASUU members in LASU, KSU (now Prince Abubakar Audu University), and FUTO
- Payment of outstanding salary arrears ranging from 25% – 35%
- Release of long-overdue promotion arrears spanning over 4 years
- Settlement of third-party deductions yet to be remitted
Prof. Piwuna emphasized that the union had exhausted all avenues of dialogue and warned that the planned industrial action would be indefinite if the Federal Government fails to meet ASUU’s demands before the set deadline.
The development has once again raised anxiety among students, parents, and stakeholders in Nigeria’s education sector, who fear another prolonged disruption of the academic calendar.
