As predicted by some political commentators, Brig Gen John Sunday Sura (Rtd), the man who alongside Sen AVM Napoleon Binkap Bali (Rtd) kept vigil during the collation of Gubernatorial election in the State to ensure that Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang wasn’t rigged out but hasn’t been accorded due recognition has officially quitted the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).

In a letter dated 13th August, 2025, Sura thanked the PDP for the platform it provided but announced his decision to quit the party.

Unconfirmed social media comments had it last month that throughout this year, Gov Mutfwang has not been returning Gen Sura’s call. The resignation of the General and former Governorship Aspirant has confirmed the rift between the duo who both hailed from the same Mwaghavul speaking tribe of Plateau State

Gov Mutfwang… Would he be able to navigate the murky political waters come 2027 as his once trusted allies turned his fiercest opponents?

It would be recalled that Hon Latep Dabang, another major player who played vital role in the emergence of Gov Mutfwang defected to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC). With Sura’s defection and rumoured joining of the APC which had recently received the former Gubernatorial Candidate of the Labour Party, Prof Patrick Dakum, the alignment ahead of 2027 promises to unleash an intriguing political gymnastics

Political watchers believe this defection may not be unconnected to realignments ahead of 2027, with strong speculations that he could be heading towards the All Progressives Congress (APC), following the growing wave of defections across Plateau State.
