President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN) as a church with a great history, built on firm faith and deeply rooted in cultural diversity.
The President made these remarks at the COCIN Headquarters in Jos during the funeral service of Late Mama Lydia Yilwatda, mother of the All Progressives Congress (APC) National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda.
Speaking with nostalgia, President Tinubu recalled his long association with Jos and its people. “I have been in Jos several times, especially during our struggles for democracy,” he said.
The President further narrated an encounter on his way from the airport to the church, saying Governor Caleb Mutfwang had pointed out to him a bungalow that belonged to Alhaji Yahaya Kwande, a close ally with whom he once fought for democracy.
Reaffirming his connection to the Plateau State capital, President Tinubu expressed joy at being back in Jos, this time as the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
Paying tribute to Late Mama Lydia Yilwatda, the President described her as a woman of deep faith and strong values whose legacy is evident in the life and service of her children. He noted that her nurturing spirit and devotion to God and family remain a shining example for generations to come.
Governor Caleb Mutfwang, who received the President on arrival, said Mama Lydia’s life was hardworking, and had strong faith in God. “She raised her children in the fear of God, and we are grateful that her values are reflected in the leadership of Prof. Nentawe. Her memory will continue to inspire Plateau people,” he stated.
In his tribute, APC National Chairman, Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, thanked President Tinubu, Governor Mutfwang, and dignitaries from across the country for honouring his late mother. He described her as “a pillar of strength, prayer, and discipline who shaped not only my life but also touched many others through her simplicity and kindness.”
The President also used the funeral servicen to preach peace, unity, and tolerance, stressing that Nigeria’s strength lies in its cultural and religious diversity. He noted that COCIN’s rich history represents the resilience of faith and the beauty of inclusion, calling on Nigerians to uphold the values of democracy, respect, and mutual coexistence.
