The ongoing trial of Jos-based businesswoman, Gladys Adija Markus, took a dramatic turn on Monday, September 29, 2025, as the court adjourned proceedings to October 21, 2025 for continuation.
Markus, who is facing trial in connection with an alleged ₦20 million business dispute with US-based investor Mara Cousin Williams, appeared in court after previously ignoring summons and being placed on a bench warrant.
During Monday’s session, court observers noted that Markus was spotted updating her Facebook page during the proceedings, an act that drew mixed reactions from those present in the courtroom.
Some described the move as disrespectful, while others saw it as a sign of her lack of seriousness toward the charges against her.
In another twist, Markus appeared in court accompanied by a traditional ruler, who reportedly pleaded with the judge on her behalf.
Following the intervention, the judge appealed to Mara Cousin Williams’ lawyer to consider allowing Markus to secure bail under the strict conditions earlier outlined.
Markus also maintained in court that Mara Cousin Williams’ grains were still stored in Bauchi State.
However, the judge ruled that Markus would be followed to know where she stays — a decision she was not comfortable with and reportedly resisted inside the courtroom.
However, another witness told Becksblog that Markus presented two sureties who own properties worth ₦10 million each to stand in for her.
Unfortunately, one of the sureties left the court after his initial appearance, only for it to be discovered that the bail form had not been completely filled and signed.
By that time, the presiding judge had also left, meaning that even if the man returned, the judge would not be available to append her signature.
From the look of things, Markus may be detained at C Division police station pending when the bail form is properly filled, the sureties’ passports are provided, and the judge signs.
The case, which has captured widespread attention both within and outside Jos, remains unresolved as the court fixed the next hearing for October 21, 2025.
As of the time of filing this report, Markus still faces the possibility of being remanded in custody should she fail to meet the stringent bail conditions of ₦20 million and two sureties with ₦10 million each in their bank.
