Late Lt Gen. Sen. Dr Jeremiah Timbut Useni: Journey To Final Resting Home Began With Service Of Songs In Abuja

The architectural marvel edifice, National Ecumenical Centre in the nation’s capital, Abuja on Saturday, 15th February, 2025 was momentarily transformed into a space of solemnity and reflection as the final journey of a great Nigerian leader, Late Lt Gen. Sen. Dr. Jeremiah Timbut Useni who passed on to the great beyond on the 23rd January, 2025 began with several prominent Nigerians attending the first of the two series of the services of songs.

Not just a military general, Sen. Useni was a statesman, who dedicated his life to the service of his country. His journey to his final resting place began with a poignant Service of Songs, an event attended by many prominent Nigerians who came to pay their respects to a man whose impact shall surely outlive his years.

Lt Gen Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, who was Chief of Army Staff from July 1975 to October 1978 and also Minister of Defence under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s administration led highly respected Nigerians including Senator Simon Bako Lalong, who represented former President Muhammadu Buhari, Arc Samuel Jatau, the Secretary to the Government of Plateau State and Chairman of the State Burial Committee constituted by Gov Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang to give the elder statesman a befitting burial, and Her Excellency, Dame Pauline Tallen

Other prominent attendees included Dr. Emmanuel Akabe, the Deputy Governor of Nasarawa State, Amb. Prof. Mary Lar, Mama Esther Bali, former and serving National Assembly members, military officers, local government chairmen, business partners and several others

The hall was adorned with floral arrangements and photographs of the late general. Dignitaries, family members, and friends honoured a man who had served with distinction and integrity. The mood was reflective, with the elegantly adorned choir rendering rendition that echoed with melodies that celebrated his life and conveying deep emotions of loss and gratitude.

Gen. Useni fondly called Jerry Boy, who passed away at the age of 82, had an illustrious career that spanned decades. He was not only a military general but also served as the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Aviation and Transportation, military governor of old Bendel State and a member of the Nigerian Senate.

The service of songs was not merely a farewell; it was a celebration of his contributions and a reminder of the values he embodied. May Lt Gen. Sen. Dr. Jeremiah Timbut Useni rest in peace, knowing that his legacy will endure in the hearts and minds of countless Nigerians.
