The Steering Committee advocating for the creation of Lowland State from Plateau State has achieved a significant milestone by submitting its comprehensive Memorandum to the National Assembly, fulfilling all constitutional requirements.
Under the leadership of Comrade Timkat Peter ACA, the Committee presented the Memorandum to the Clerk of the National Assembly, who acknowledged the timely submission and adherence to the guidelines outlined in the 1999 Constitution.
The Memorandum proposes the establishment of Lowland State, encompassing nine existing local government areas – Langtang North, Langtang South, Wase, Mikang, Shendam, Qua’an-Pan, Kanke, Kanam, and Pankshin – and incorporating 24 newly proposed local government areas. Specifically, each existing LGA will have three additional LGAs, with Mikang and Kanke each receiving two.
The submission includes:
- Signatures of supporting citizens from the nine LGAs.
- A detailed map of the proposed Lowland State, delineating both existing and proposed LGAs.
- A pictorial inventory of the region’s natural resources.
- A comprehensive economic development plan.
- A thorough needs assessment report.
- Endorsement letters from National Assembly members.
The Committee has garnered substantial support from key figures, including Hon. Chief John Dafaan, Senator Simon Bako Lalong, and Senator Prince Pam Mwadkon.
Hon. Chief John Dafaan, Chairman of the Plateau State National Assembly Caucus, has pledged to mobilize support among his colleagues. Senator Simon Bako Lalong has committed to securing presidential approval from President Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu GCFR.
This submission represents a crucial step forward for the Concerned Plateau State Citizens Committee for the Creation of Lowland State. The Committee will now focus on engaging stakeholders across the nine LGAs and collaborating with the Plateau State Government, under the leadership of His Excellency Barrister Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, to ensure widespread support.
The Committee remains hopeful that this initiative will bring significant development to the region.
