Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has voiced strong criticism of Nigeria’s current leadership, asserting that the country is enduring its most severe crisis since its amalgamation in 1914.
Speaking at a public lecture in Abuja, El-Rufai described those in power as “urban bandits” who lack the competence to govern.
The event, which marked the 60th birthday of former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, focused on the theme: “Weaponisation of Poverty as a Means of Underdevelopment: A Case Study of Nigeria.”
In his address, El-Rufai lamented that Nigerians have continuously elected leaders who are unfit to manage the nation’s affairs. “Nigeria is in its worst condition since 1914, and this is why we are working together to build a coalition to return the country to the right path,” he said.
He accused the current leadership of being opportunists who know how to gain power but lack the vision or skills to use it effectively. “We’re not talking about bandits in the forest. These are urban bandits, people who have captured the reins of power with no clue how to lead,” El-Rufai remarked.
The former governor called on citizens to be more discerning in future elections. “By 2027, Nigerians must evaluate candidates based on competence, capacity, and commitment to national progress,” he advised.
Recall that El-Rufai recently switched allegiance from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Social Democratic Party (SDP). He has since been vocal about the potential of a united opposition to defeat President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 polls.
El-Rufai emphasized that even if Tinubu rallies the support of all state governors, he could still be unseated if Nigerians decisively reject his leadership.
