…Say Ummulkhair Was Only Invited for Clarification, Not Arrested
The Plateau State Police Command has debunked viral claims alleging the arrest of social media activist, Miss Ummulkhair Abdulmumin Iliyasu, describing the reports as “false and misleading.”
In a press statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Alfred Alabo, and made available to Trill Times News on Tuesday, the Command stated that no officer stormed the activist’s residence or detained her as alleged by some online platforms.
“The Command wishes to strongly refute some malicious reports making rounds on social media regarding the alleged arrest of one Miss Ummulkhair Abdulmumin Iliyasu,” the statement read.
“Contrary to what was portrayed in the viral falsehood, the Command only invited her for questioning and clarification following a report about an inciting social media post capable of creating chaos in the State.”
According to the police, Miss Iliyasu honoured the invitation to the Command Headquarters in Jos, where she was cautioned against making inciting remarks and advised to use proper channels to seek clarification on government policies rather than resorting to inflammatory online content.
The Command stressed that she was neither arrested nor detained, emphasizing that the action taken was aimed at maintaining peace and preventing misinformation, not suppressing free speech.
“The Command categorically states that the said social media activist was not arrested or detained in any of our facilities. Our actions were geared towards maintaining peace and order, not suppressing citizens’ freedom of speech,” DSP Alabo clarified.
He also dismissed claims that the invitation was directed by the Plateau State Government or the Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area, describing such insinuations as “falsehood of a high magnitude.”
Reiterating the police’s commitment to the rule of law and the protection of citizens’ rights, the statement cautioned social media users against spreading unverified information capable of inciting unrest.
“The Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel Olugbemiga Adesina, appeals to peace-loving citizens to promote responsible social media usage, show respect for others, and support efforts to sustain peace and stability across the State,” the statement concluded
