Plateau United’s troubled start to the 2025/26 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) season may have found a turning point yesterday as the Sports-loving Governor, Barr Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang paid a morale-boosting visit to the club’s home ground- New Jos International Stadium, pledging full support to restore the team’s winning tradition.
The Peace Boys as the 2017 NPFL Champions are fondly called, still without a win after three weeks of action in the 2025/2026 NPFL season, have endured a turbulent opening spell as the club restructures for the future under new management and a fresh technical crew.
Confidence among fans had begun to dip, but yesterday’s visit of the governor to the team home ground has been widely interpreted as a rallying call – not just for the players, but for the entire Plateau sporting community.
Governor Mutfwang charged the team to remain focused and resilient, stressing that the state government recognizes the club as a symbol of pride and unity. “Football is more than just a game here on the Plateau; it is part of our identity. Plateau United has carried our name with honor in the past, and I have no doubt that the time is now for you to rise again,” he told the players and coaching staff.
His visit comes just days before a highly anticipated home clash against the defending Champions, Remo Stars, a fixture that many analysts believe could spark Plateau United’s season revival.
Chairman of Langtang North FA, Amb Miri Timnan Nyantau, fondly called M.T.N said “The governor’s presence, coupled with renewed backing from the club’s hierarchy, is expected to lift spirits in the dressing room and in the stands. The governor has again done the needful at the right time and I am confident that Plateau United shall claim all 3 points against Remo Stars on Sunday”
Appealing to fans to be patient with the team as restructuring in football takes a while to bear fruits, Amb M.T.N likened the Plateau United’s struggles to the early days of legendary Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United. “Sir Alex Ferguson who is widely held as the most successful football coach in the history of the sport endured even more turbulent early days at Manchester United but with the club’s and fans backing, he would match on to conquer the world. Fans should rally round the Barr Gideon Izang’s led Plateau United and watch how the team revives”, MTN told Trill Times News
“With a new leadership structure off the pitch and tactical adjustments on it, I am highly optimistic that Plateau United can turn the corner and re-establish themselves as a formidable force in the NPFL”, he added
Across section of supporters have also lauded the gesture, describing it as a much-needed show of solidarity at a time when results have been hard to come by.
The governor’s visit as kickoff against Remo Stars looms on Sunday at the famous New Jos International Stadium, sends a clear message: the whole Plateau is uniting behind Plateau United in what could mark the beginning of a season of redemption.
