The Nigerian National Assembly is meant to be a chamber of dignity, wisdom, and service to the people. Yet, time and again, we witness shocking displays of arrogance, disrespect, and outright disregard for the values that should define true leadership. The recent incident involving Senator Nwaebonyi Peter Onyekachi, who allegedly called a 70-year-old woman—a person old enough to be his mother—a fool, is a disgraceful reflection of the kind of individuals entrusted with representing the people.
How did we get to a point where public officeholders see themselves as above basic decency and respect? The title “Honourable” is supposed to symbolize dignity, maturity, and a deep sense of responsibility, yet many of our lawmakers exhibit behavior that is anything but honourable. Instead of engaging in meaningful discourse and policies that uplift Nigerians, they trade insults, engage in physical brawls, and belittle the very citizens who put them in power.
This is not just about one senator’s reckless utterance—it is about a systemic failure of character and integrity in our leadership. The National Assembly should be an institution of national pride, not a theatre of embarrassment. When elected officials show no respect for decorum, for the elderly, or for the people they serve, what example are they setting for the nation?
Nigerians must begin to demand more than just political representation; we must insist on leaders with the right values. Character matters. Integrity matters. If those in power cannot uphold these basic principles, then they are not fit to lead. Our democracy cannot thrive when those entrusted with its guardianship continue to act with impunity and arrogance. It is time for real accountability and for honour to return to our National Assembly.
