Nigeria has recorded a major breakthrough in the fight against HIV with the introduction of Lenacapavir, a revolutionary injection that offers protection against the virus with just two shots per year.
Health experts describe the development as a game changer in HIV prevention, especially for people in high-risk situations or those in relationships with HIV-positive partners.
Lenacapavir, developed by Gilead Sciences, is administered once every six months. Unlike daily preventive pills, the injection removes the burden of remembering medication every day. With just two injections annually, users receive strong and sustained protection against HIV.
Medical trials have shown the drug to be highly effective in preventing HIV transmission, even in cases of unprotected sexual exposure. Public health advocates say this could significantly reduce new infections across communities if widely adopted.
In the United States, the treatment costs an estimated ₦45 million per year. However, in Nigeria, the injection is available for ₦58,000, thanks to heavy subsidies and support from international health organizations.
Key partners assisting with cost management and distribution include the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), Unitaid, and Wits Reproductive Health and HIV Institute (Wits RHI).
Public health stakeholders say the subsidy ensures affordability for Nigerians who need protection but cannot afford the high international cost.
“This is the beauty of science,” a health advocate said. “Innovation, partnership, and access coming together to save lives.”
Experts are encouraging Nigerians, especially those at higher risk of exposure, to consult qualified healthcare providers for proper guidance before opting for the injection.
With Lenacapavir now available locally, Nigeria may be entering a new chapter in HIV prevention, one defined not by daily pills, but by just two injections a year.
