The Mysterious Stand-Alone Wase Rock
Wase Rock is a massive dome shaped rocky inselberg found in Wase town in Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State.
It is in fact, the only of such rocks in the state and one of only three in Nigeria, the others being the Zuma Rock in Abuja and Idanre Hills in Ondo State.
The mysterious ‘Stand-Alone’ Wase Rock is a trachyte neck rising 295 metres (978 ft) from the floor of the Benue Rift, above the surface of the neighbouring surroundings and 543 metres (1,781 ft) above sea level.
According to history, it is the remains of a once giant volcano with its vertical sides, with its summit split into two by a narrow chasm and the base is surrounded by talus slopes.
This mysterious Wase Rock is a naturally-occurring stand-alone mountainous stone, which towers over the plains of Wase.
The magnificent sight the rock commands can be seen and felt clearly from a distance of three to four kilometres from its actual location.
It is this ability to hold any visitor spellbound, that makes this massive monument a spectacular inselberg and a great tourism attraction in Plateau State.
A close encounter with the dome shaped Wase Rock shows its stunning appearance, as well as its naked isolation and harbours rare birds like white pelicans, black monkeys and baboons who prowl the area unhindered.
