Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal, has declared that there is a growing consensus in Northern Nigeria that President Bola Tinubu should not be returned to office in the 2027 general election.
Lawal made the assertion while speaking on the political mood in the North ahead of the next election cycle, insisting that the region is “seriously mobilising” around a shared position.
“The North is seriously mobilising with a consensus that Bola Tinubu must give way in the 2027 election. There’s no doubt about the consensus. There’s no argument about that,” he said.
Although he acknowledged past differences with former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, Lawal stated that he is prepared to align with him on the 2027 objective.
“I may not have been supporting El-Rufai’s position, but on this one, I will join him to see how we can stop Bola Tinubu from winning the 2027 election,” he said.
Lawal warned that a continuation of the current administration’s policies for another four years could worsen socio-economic conditions in the North, painting a grim picture of the region’s future if there is no political change.
“Everybody understands that if we are to continue with these policies for another four years, Northern Nigeria will become one large refugee camp,” he added.
He further stressed that, in his view, the push for an alternative candidate in 2027 is driven largely by what he described as a quest for “self-preservation” in the region.
The remarks are expected to intensify political conversations within the ruling All Progressives Congress and beyond, as alignments and counter-alignments gradually begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 general elections.
