The House of Representatives will reconvene on Tuesday, February 17, 2026, for an emergency sitting to consider issues arising from the recently announced 2027 General Election timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission.
The House Spokesman, Rep. Akin Rotimi, mnipr, disclosed this in a press statement issued on Friday in Abuja, explaining that the decision followed an internal memorandum circulated to members by the Office of the Speaker.
According to Rotimi, the memo drew the attention of lawmakers to the constitutional and national significance of the new electoral timetable and the necessity for immediate legislative engagement.
“The emergency sitting reflects the resolve of the House to respond promptly to issues with far-reaching implications for the nation’s democratic process,” the spokesman stated.
He added that deliberations during the session would focus strictly on legislative matters connected to the timetable announcement, in line with the constitutional mandate of the National Assembly.
The House, he noted, is determined to ensure that all related legislative concerns are addressed expeditiously to safeguard the integrity, clarity, and smooth conduct of the 2027 electoral process.
Honourable Members have been strongly advised to prioritise attendance at the emergency sitting, given the weight of the issues under review.
Reaffirming its commitment to democratic governance, the House emphasised that it remains steadfast in strengthening Nigeria’s democratic institutions through responsive, transparent, and responsible lawmaking in the best interest of the Nigerian people.
