The indefinite strike by staff of Plateau State-owned tertiary institutions has entered a new phase, as unions across the affected schools have voted to continue the industrial action, rejecting a N100 million offer from the state government.
The strike, coordinated under the Joint Union of Academic Staff of Plateau State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JUASPTI), shows no immediate signs of resolution following a series of congresses held in the various institutions to review the government’s proposal.
Trill Times News gathered that the meetings, held yesterday, Monday 4th June 2026, were convened by union leaderships to allow members deliberate on the offer, which was to be shared among the institutions.
However, workers at the congresses reportedly expressed strong dissatisfaction with what they described as the government’s nonchalant approach to their demands.
Union members criticised the selective implementation of the approved 25 and 35 per cent salary increments, noting that while Plateau State University, Bokkos has benefited from the adjustment, other state-owned institutions have yet to receive similar treatment.
The development has further deepened grievances among staff, who insist on full and equitable implementation across all institutions as a condition for suspending the strike.
Efforts by heads of tertiary institutions who attended the congresses to persuade workers to reconsider the government’s offer were unsuccessful. Sources said the officials were not allowed to address the gatherings, as aggrieved members rejected any move perceived as undermining their position.
The impact of the ongoing strike continues to ripple across the campuses. At Plateau State Polytechnic, Barkin Ladi, the 2025/2026 first semester examinations were abruptly halted midway, leaving students stranded and academic activities in disarray.
