Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has removed all Fulani district heads, popularly known as Ardos, and replaced them with indigenous Nupe traditional chiefs in what is being described as a major reform of the state’s traditional leadership structure.
The Governor said the decision was taken as part of ongoing efforts to tackle the growing insecurity in the state, particularly kidnapping, violent attacks, land disputes, and the destruction of farmlands.
According to the state government, the action was prompted by concerns that some Fulani leaders had allegedly aided the influx of herders from neighbouring countries, a development believed to have contributed to recurring clashes with indigenous communities.
Under the new arrangement, indigenous village chiefs will now take over responsibilities previously handled by the Ardos, while some traditional positions have been redesignated as Hakimi to strengthen local administration and improve security coordination.
Governor Bago expressed confidence that the restructuring would restore greater confidence in the traditional institution, improve collaboration between communities and security agencies, and support ongoing efforts to curb crime across the state.
The move marks a significant change in Niger State’s traditional leadership system and is expected to attract mixed reactions from community leaders, stakeholders, and the general public.
