The long-running leadership battle rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has finally been shut down by the court.
In a decisive ruling on Tuesday, the Federal High Court in Abuja threw out the suit filed by Senator Samuel Anyanwu, who had challenged his removal as the party’s National Secretary. Justice M. G. Umar ruled that the court has no power to interfere in the internal affairs of a political party.
The judge also rejected Anyanwu’s bid to stop the PDP and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognizing party documents not signed by him, declaring the request legally untenable.
More damaging to Anyanwu’s case, the court described the suit as an abuse of court process, pointing to multiple cases filed on the same matter in different courts. Justice Umar further noted that Anyanwu’s tenure, which began in 2021, had already run its course.
With the ruling, the court formally recognized the Kabiru Tanimu Turaki–led National Working Committee (NWC) as the authentic leadership of the PDP, elected at the party’s National Convention in Ibadan in November 2025.
The judgment effectively brings an end to the PDP leadership crisis and lays to rest lingering questions over the party’s national structure. However, the party continues to face political headwinds, as several former leaders at various levels across the country have recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
Still, the court verdict delivers a major boost to the PDP’s leadership, restoring legal clarity and structural stability after months of internal turmoil.
