In the tense years of Nigeria’s military era, when power shifted quietly behind closed doors, one name stood at the centre of National Defence General Domkat Yah Bali.
Born on 27 February 1940 in Langtang, present-day Plateau State, Domkat Bali joined the Nigerian Army in 1961, at a time when the country was still finding its feet after independence.
He would go on to train at the Royal Military Academy, Sandhurst, one of the world’s most respected military institutions.
By the mid-1980s, Bali had risen to the very top.
Between 1984 and 1990, he served as Nigeria’s Minister of Defence and later as Chief of Defence Staff, making him the highest-ranking military officer in the country.
He worked under both General Muhammadu Buhari and General Ibrahim Babangida, helping to coordinate the Army, Navy, and Air Force during a politically sensitive period.
Unlike many power figures of that era, Domkat Bali was widely described by colleagues as a professional soldier disciplined, reserved, and deeply committed to institutional order rather than personal ambition. He retired from active service in 1990, stepping away quietly from power.
When he passed on 4 December 2020, Nigeria lost not just a general, but a symbol of an era when military leadership shaped the nation’s direction for better or worse.
History may debate the military years, but Domkat Bali’s place in Nigeria’s Defence structure is firmly written.
