Unprovoked attack again by suspected Fulani Herdsmen plagued Plateau State, as an early morning attack on Monday in the Te’ebbe community, Miango District of Bassa Local Government Area, resulted in the deaths of three family members—a mother and her two daughters—while two others, a man and a woman, sustained gunshot wounds and are currently receiving medical treatment in Jos.
According to local sources, the victims were harvesting tomatoes when they were ambushed. The attack occurred just hours before a government-appointed fact-finding committee held a stakeholder engagement at the Bassa LGA secretariat.
The committee, established by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to investigate the root causes of violence in the state from 2001 to date, is chaired by retired Major General Nicholas Roger. Upon learning of the incident, the committee visited the scene and extended condolences to the bereaved family.
Tensions briefly escalated among youths of the Irigwe community, who expressed outrage over the killings. The situation was brought under control through the intervention of the committee and the Bassa LGA chairman.
Community members allege that Fulani herders were responsible for the attack. They claim that a phone belonging to one of the victims was answered by an individual believed to be a Fulani man, who allegedly hurled insults.
The attackers reportedly fled toward neighboring Kaduna State, which shares a border with Te’ebbe.
As part of its fact-finding mission, the committee also visited Kwal, where they were shown mass graves of recent victims, including three from a separate attack and 54 others killed in the Zike massacre on April 14, 2025.
The local government chairman expressed concern that no suspects have been apprehended in connection with the Zike killings.
Major General Roger (rtd) confirmed that he has contacted sector commanders in the area and submitted a preliminary report on the Te’ebbe attack.
The Plateau State Government has reiterated its commitment to uncovering the causes of ongoing violence and delivering justice.
However, the latest incident underscores the fragile security situation and the urgent need for sustainable peacebuilding efforts across the region.
