Plateau State University, Bokkos, and the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) are exploring a groundbreaking partnership to enhance the safety and well-being of staff and students. This collaboration commenced on February 6, when FRSC officials paid a courtesy visit to the university.
Professor Shedrack Best, Acting Vice Chancellor, acknowledged the FRSC’s crucial role in ensuring road safety and expressed the university’s eagerness to partner for mutual benefit. Associate Prof. Keziah Ayuba, Deputy Vice Chancellor Administration, who represented Prof. Best shared her personal experiences with FRSC officers, highlighting how their enforcement of traffic rules has improved her own safety awareness.
“I have come to realize that the pressure we get from FRSC officers to comply with traffic rules is for our own safety,” said Associate Prof. Ayuba.
Commander Miri Sohtim Nyantau of the FRSC Bukuru zone in charge of Jos South, Barkin Ladi and Bokkos, outlined potential areas of collaboration, including:
- Traffic Management: FRSC assistance with controlling vehicular and human traffic during university events like matriculation and convocation.
- Rescue Services: 24-hour rescue services in the event of accidents.
- Driver Licensing: Processing driver licenses for university drivers and staff.
- Staff training: FRSC to conduct refresher training for university drivers etc.
- Sensitization Programs: Inviting FRSC to conduct orientation programs for students.
The meeting concluded with both parties committing to further discussions to establish a sustainable collaboration that benefits staff, students, and the wider university community.
This partnership is particularly significant given the university’s growing student population currently at over 13,000, with over 3,400 newly admitted students in the 2024/2025 academic session.
By working together, Plateau State University and the FRSC aim to create a safer and more secure environment for everyone on campus.
