When AVM Napoleon Binkap Bali retired in 2019 as former Commander of the Presidential Air Fleet and Air Officer Commanding, many believed he was stepping into political uncertainty.
They laughed. They sneered. They called him a “baby politician.”
They assumed politics would humble him.

In 2022, during the PDP primaries for Plateau South Senatorial Zone, Bali did not beg for space. He did not negotiate for crumbs. He bulldozed his way through entrenched political warlords and secured the ticket against all calculations. That was the first shock.
The second shock came in 2023.
On the platform of the opposition PDP, he faced one of the most powerful political figures in the country, a sitting governor, former Chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, and Director-General of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Campaign Organization, His Excellency Simon Bako Lalong.
This was not a local contest. This was a political war.
And Napoleon Bali won at the ballot, defeating Lalong with one of the highest vote margins ever recorded in the history of Plateau South, margin of 57,170 votes
It sent shockwaves across the state.
Though the Court of Appeal later overturned the victory on technical grounds relating to party structure, the political message was already delivered: Bali was no accidental contender. He was a force.
And forces do not retreat, they regroup.
Learning from the structural weaknesses that cost him at the courts, Bali recalibrated. Alongside his longtime associate and Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, he strategically realigned with the ruling APC and President Tinubu.
Many APC heavyweights felt he would be subdued.
They thought the “former air officer” would struggle within established party machinery.
They miscalculated again.
Fast forward to February 21, 2026, APC Local Government Congresses.
In Langtang North, established stakeholders had reportedly consulted in Jos and tilted toward Binbut Binfa. Present at those consultations were influential personalities including Hon. Brian Dadi, Gen. Temlong, Hon. Nanbol, Danjuma Siman, Hon. Sunday Hassan, Ponzing Gamde, Nanman Kparbong, Hon. Amos Kumtul, and the Secretary to the Government of Plateau State, Samuel Nanchang Jatau.
It appeared settled.
Until Bali stepped in.
He backed Selbol Jangbut and when the dust cleared, his candidate emerged victorious.
Structure met strategy. And strategy won.
Across the six Local Governments in the Southern Zone, it is alleged that four APC LGA Chairmen emerged through individuals aligned with Bali’s political network.
Coincidence? Hardly.
What critics call aggression, his supporters call discipline. What opponents call domination, his allies call organization.
The truth is simpler: Napoleon Bali understands power, how to build it, protect it, and deploy it.
As the 2026 APC primaries approach, those still dismissing him as an overambitious newcomer are walking into the same trap that swallowed his previous opponents.
This is a man who defeated a sitting governor at the polls. A man who has shown he can dismantle entrenched structures. A man who has learned from defeat and returned stronger.
Politics in Plateau South is no longer about seniority alone. It is about control of structure, influence, and timing.
And right now, few command those elements like AVM (Rtd) Napoleon Binkap Bali.
Those still underrating him are not being strategic.
They are being reckless.
And in politics, just like in the military, underestimating a battle-tested commander can be a very costly mistake.
