A social and political commentator, Ms. Precious Kaneng Yohana, has debunked viral claims suggesting that Jos-based content creator, Ms. Ummulkhair Abdulmumin Iliyasu, was arrested by security agencies on the orders of the Plateau State Government or the Chairman of Jos North Local Government Area.
In a clarification posted on her verified Facebook page, Ms. Yohana described the circulating report as “false and misleading,” stressing that what transpired was simply a case of “two fighting,” not a government-instigated arrest.
According to her, the misunderstanding began after a heated online exchange between Ms. Iliyasu and one Mr. Umar Muhammad over some of Ms. Iliyasu’s videos which were considered “highly inciting.” One of such videos, she noted, centered on the controversial issue of indigene forms in Jos North LGA – a matter historically reserved for the Berom, Anaguta, and Afizere ethnic groups.
Ms. Yohana explained that Ms. Iliyasu had publicly challenged the indigene policy and appeared to be rallying the Hausa settlers around the issue, repeatedly citing their electoral influence in the state – a move Mr. Umar reportedly found worrisome given the area’s delicate peace.
Trill Times News gathers that following their social media altercation, Ms. Iliyasu first reported Mr. Umar to the Area Command. In response, Mr. Umar filed a formal petition addressed to the Commissioner of Police and copied to the Department of State Services (DSS).
Both parties were later invited to the Plateau State Police Headquarters for questioning. They were individually interrogated before being brought together in the office of the Commissioner of Police, where they were counseled and cautioned.
Ms. Yohana stated that Ms. Iliyasu was issued a stern warning against producing or sharing any content capable of disrupting the fragile peace in Jos North, and was directed to take down her inflammatory posts.
She emphasized that the entire process was initiated by a concerned citizen – not the state government – who sought to prevent an escalation of tensions. “The invitation and the investigative steps were not at the instance of the Plateau State Government nor the Chairman of Jos North LGA. Majority of Plateau people are as concerned as Mr. Umar is,” Yohana clarified.
Concluding her statement, Ms. Yohana promised to publish a follow-up piece addressing the contending issue of indigene forms in Jos North, while urging the public to desist from spreading misinformation capable of stoking ethnic or religious tension in the state.
