Former Nigerian Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, Prof. Amb. Mary Lar, has visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, United States, where she paid glowing tributes to Nigerians who have distinguished themselves in international service.
Prof. Lar, who is the founder of the Solomon and Mary Lar Foundation, was received by the Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed during the visit. Their meeting centred on issues of global development, humanitarian service, and Nigeria’s role within the United Nations system.
Speaking during the engagement, the former envoy praised Nigerians who have made meaningful contributions on the global stage and brought honour to the country through their service. She paid special tribute to the late Major-Gen. Joseph Nanven Garba fondly known as Joe Garba, former President of the United Nations General Assembly, describing him as an outstanding son of Nigeria and a distinguished military officer from Langtang North, Plateau State, whose leadership earned the respect of the international community.
The former old Plateau’s First Lady said visiting the United Nations headquarters was the fulfilment of a long-held dream, noting that she had always hoped to see the place where representatives of nations gather to discuss peace, development, and the future of the world. She described the experience as deeply moving and one she would cherish for a long time.
She also commended Amina J. Mohammed, saying it was a source of pride that a Nigerian woman occupies one of the highest offices in the United Nations and continues to represent the country with distinction in international diplomacy and development.
Prof. Lar, wife of late Chief Solomon Daushep Lar, the first civilian governor of Plateau State and icon of Nigeria’s democracy was accompanied on the visit by Dr. Chalya Lar.
The visit is the continuation work of the Solomon and Mary Lar Foundation in promoting peace, development, humanitarian service, and international engagement, while drawing attention once again to Nigeria’s long record of service within the United Nations system.
