Academic activities across Plateau State-owned tertiary institutions are set to come to a halt as the Joint Union of Academic Staff of Plateau State Owned Tertiary Institutions (JUASPTI) has declared an indefinite strike beginning Thursday, April 30, 2026.
Exclusively obtained by Trill Times News, the letter was signed by Comr. Cirfat Yaknan Bulus, Chairman, and Comr. Dakyen Mark Makmis, Secretary.
The strike is expected to significantly disrupt academic calendars across state-owned institutions, leaving students and stakeholders uncertain about when normal academic activities will resume. Mostly affected among the institutions is Plateau State Polytechnic Barkin Ladi where the 2025/2026 First Semester Examinations are halted midway.
The decision was conveyed in an official notice dated April 29, 2026, and addressed to the Head of Civil Service of Plateau State. The union stated that the action follows the expiration of its earlier three-day warning strike, which commenced on April 24, 2026.
According to the union, the warning strike was intended to give the Plateau State Government an opportunity to respond to its longstanding demand for the full implementation of the 25 percent and 35 percent CONPCASS salary structure. The union noted that this demand has remained unresolved since October 2023.
JUASPTI expressed dissatisfaction with what it described as the government’s failure to act within the given timeframe, prompting the escalation to an indefinite strike. The union emphasized that the industrial action will continue until its demands are fully met.
“All chapters and members are hereby directed to maintain total compliance until further notice,” the statement read.
Efforts to get an official response from the Plateau State Government were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
