Tension is rapidly building at Plateau State University (PLASU), Bokkos, as a looming legal battle threatens to erupt between the university management and a group of newly admitted postgraduate students who claim they have been unfairly denied registration after fulfilling all admission requirements.
The affected students alleged that they were duly offered postgraduate admission by the university, paid the prescribed acceptance fees, and were issued official admission notifications, only to be abruptly stopped from completing their registration.
According to them, the sudden reversal was justified by the university on the grounds that they possess Higher National Diploma/ Postgraduate Diplomas (PGD), a condition which, they argue, was known to the institution before admission was granted.
Sources among the students describe the development as shocking and distressing, noting that many of them resigned from jobs, relocated to Bokkos, and made financial commitments based on the admission offers.
They insist that it is unjust for the university to collect acceptance fees and later disqualify them at the point of registration without prior notice or clear policy communication.
The students further accuse the university authorities of administrative inconsistency and lack of transparency, stressing that the admission process involved document screening where their qualifications were presented and verified. They argue that if HND/ PGD holders were ineligible, such applicants should not have been offered admission in the first place.
Efforts by the affected candidates to seek clarification from relevant departments have reportedly yielded no satisfactory resolution, prompting them to consider legal action against the Vice Chancellor and the university management.
They maintain that their rights as admitted students have been violated and are demanding immediate registration.
As of the time of filing this report, the management of Plateau State University, Bokkos, has not issued an official statement addressing the allegations.
However, insiders suggest that the matter has sparked serious concern within the academic community, with fears that a prolonged dispute could further dent the institution’s image.
With legal consultations already underway, observers say the coming days may determine whether the standoff is resolved internally or escalates into a full-blown court battle that could set a significant precedent for postgraduate admissions in Nigerian universities.
