ABEOKUTA – The Ogun State Government has prohibited graduation ceremonies for pupils in Nursery, Kindergarten and all other non-terminal classes in both public and private schools across the state.
The directive was contained in a circular dated June 18, 2026, issued by the Ogun State Ministry of Education, Science and Technology through its Department of Private Schools. The circular, referenced PRVS 426/5, was signed by A.A. Bisiriyu, Director of Education (Private Schools), on behalf of the Permanent Secretary of the ministry.
According to the circular, the decision followed concerns raised by stakeholders and the need to protect parents and guardians from unnecessary financial burdens associated with end-of-session celebrations and graduation activities.
The government stated that graduation ceremonies should be restricted only to learners completing recognised stages of education, namely Primary Six, Junior Secondary School Three (JSS 3), and Senior Secondary School Three (SSS 3).
The ministry further directed that graduation ceremonies for these categories of learners must be conducted modestly and at no financial cost to students, parents or guardians.
In addition, schools have been barred from using canopies, aso ebi, customised attire and other forms of extravagant social displays during graduation events.
The government urged schools to focus more on academic recognition and character development rather than elaborate celebrations that place financial pressure on families.
The circular also directed all proprietors, school heads and administrators of public and private schools to give the directive wide publicity and ensure strict compliance.
It warned that any school found violating the directive would face sanctions in line with existing regulations governing school operations in Ogun State.
